The capacity to live in your true nature of health and wellbeing is real. I can help you along your healing journey with the power of nutrition.
My healing journey with nutrition began after I contracted C. Difficile, a bacterial infection that can cause colitis and a lot of harm to the colon. For 6 months I was undiagnosed and suffered from chronic intestinal pain and other GI symptoms. My body was weak, and my mind was overtasked from the chronic nature of my intestinal discomfort. Food became something I felt unsafe around. Eating was the trigger for painful symptoms and I could never tell what food may cause me pain.
I felt anxious at mealtime and disconnected from my body. Not only was my physical health compromised, but my wellbeing was deteriorating due to the constant fear around food. Even after treatment for C. difficile, my GI was not the same. By the grace of my GP, I finally received food allergy testing a year later. It turns out that I had developed food allergies to peanuts and wheat due to the trauma the infection caused in my intestine. Within a month of eliminating these foods, I experienced a tremendous leap in the healing of my gut. Using the bathroom was not as a tumultuous experience. I felt less bloated and little pain. However, my relationship with food and my body was still fear-based. I still felt fearful about future GI issues, scared of accidentally eating the foods I am allergic to, and was focused on dis-ease in my body. Another level of healing was still needed in my recovery.
With the practice of mindfulness, I was better able to understand how important my relationship to my body was for my overall sense of wellbeing. With this practice, I was able to touch all the non-problems of my body, while being present to some lingering GI discomfort without judgment. I then decided to see if I could support others experiencing such challenges with health, wellbeing, and food-related behavior. Indeed, it is what I aim to offer all my clients still to this day.
My Values in Nutrition
Within my practice, I apply evidenced-based research with my clinical experience to provide you an individualized nutrition experience. The foundation of my practice is rooted in the healing power of a whole foods-based way of eating. Starting with eating real, unprocessed foods is the first step to any healing journey with nutrition. With this foundation, we will build into protocols, interventions, and lifestyle habits that align with your specific needs and biological individuality. My mission is to uncover the underlying nutrition problem you are experiencing. We treat this nutritional problem as the root cause of symptoms and conditions you may be experiencing.
Nutrition is less of a treatment and is more of a practice. It takes behavior change, learning, and new habits to achieve your goals of health and wellbeing. However, it is often the case that the simplest of first steps can result in an alleviation of symptoms quickly in a very noticeable way. This felt improvement of wellbeing and health is the first step in healing. It opens up the door to new ways of eating that nourish on a deeper level than previously experienced.
My Experience and Training
I have had experience in the field of integrative health since 2017. Working and interning in three different integrative health clinics has provided me with clinical expertise for the treatment of metabolic conditions such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and obesity. Complementary to clinical experience, I have led mindful eating classes aimed at shifting food-related behavior for those in need of nutrition-behavior counseling. Conditions such as IBS, IBD, SIBO, gut dysbiosis, and leaky gut are G.I. issues I have extensive experience with treating.
I received my Master's of Science Degree from Maryland University of Integrative Health in 2017. During this time and the following year, I was an intern and teaching assistant for my school's on-campus clinic called the Natural Care Center. I received 1000hrs of clinical training at this location, Capital Integrative Health, and CHI Healthcare. Following my clinical training, certification (CNS), and licensure to practice in the state of Maryland (LDN), I worked as a nutritionist at Third Space Wellness in Silver Spring, MD. At the end of 2019, I decided to start my own practice, True Nature Wellness LLC.
In 2020, I completed the evidence-based Mindfulness-Based Eating Awareness Training (MB-EAT) and was trained in this model by Andrea Lieberstein.
Outside of nutrition, I am also a 200 RYT yoga instructor and have been teaching for 8 years. Meditation and yoga are practices that I find to be complementary to nutrition. They are wonderful practices for cultivating well-being in mind and body.
